%2C%20track%20and%20field%2C%20cross-country%2C%20and%20tennis%29.%20Rates%20and%20patterns%20of%20injury%20were%20evaluated%2C%20with%20injury%20rates%20calculated%20as%20ratio%20of%20injuries%20per%2010%2C000%20athlete-exposures.%20Rate%20ratios%20%28RRs%29%20were%20calculated%20to%20compare%20the%20LESI%20rates%20in%20girls%20and%20boys.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Results%3A%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20In%20both%20genders%2C%20LESI%20rates%20%28per%2010%2C000%20athlete-exposures%29%20were%20highest%20in%20soccer%20%28girls%2C%2015.87%3B%20boys%2C%2011.68%29%20followed%20by%20basketball%20%28girls%2C%2011.51%3B%20boys%2C%209.35%29%2C%20and%20were%20lowest%20in%20swimming%20and%20diving%20%28girls%2C%200.70%3B%20boys%2C%200.39%29.%20Although%20injury%20rates%20were%20significantly%20higher%20in%20girls%20compared%20with%20boys%20in%20all%20sports%2C%20only%20in%20tennis%20was%20the%20RR%20greater%20than%202%20%28RR%2C%202.03%3B%2095%25%20CI%2C%201.17-3.54%29.%20Girls%20had%20a%20greater%20proportion%20of%20severe%20LESIs%20and%20injuries%20that%20received%20radiographic%20evaluation%2C%20such%20as%20magnetic%20resonance%20imaging%2C%20compared%20with%20boys%20for%20all%20sports%20except%20volleyball.%20Consistency%20in%20the%20mechanism%20of%20injury%20was%20demonstrated%20between%20genders%20within%20each%20sport.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Conclusion%3A%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20This%20study%20demonstrated%20that%20LESIs%20are%20common%20among%20high%20school%20athletes%20and%20disproportionately%20affect%20girls%20more%20than%20boys%2C%20especially%20when%20looking%20at%20severe%20injuries%20and%20resource%20utilization.%20Further%20studies%20are%20needed%20to%20elucidate%20the%20cause%20of%20these%20findings.%20We%20hope%20that%20the%20awareness%20of%20gender-based%20differences%20in%20LESIs%20will%20lead%20to%20improvements%20in%20targeted%20efforts%20to%20decrease%20injury%20rates%20and%20injury%20severity.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222019-10-01%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1177%5C%2F2325967119873059%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%222325-9671%2C%202325-9671%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fjournals.sagepub.com%5C%2Fdoi%5C%2F10.1177%5C%2F2325967119873059%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22I5JNRBPB%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222025-03-07T20%3A44%3A41Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
